Develop personal and commited interest in your course;
People fail because the show a bad behavioral disposition in their studies.Simply put, you can't enjoy a course you don't have interest in and the result is irritation in reading/studying that course and it is a great hindrance to students.

Attend Lectures/tutorials;
Attend lectures as it is a"conditio sine qua non" for your success in your academics.Some lecturers discuss how the exams will look like,some give hints,some even treat exam questions in class making the exams palatable for those who attend class.You can use that opportunity to ask salient questions and get answers.
Effective time management;
To be a "first class material" you must effectively manage your time.Draw a scale of preference at all times between going for parties,night clubs,social functions,religious functions,studies etc. Try to manage to time ,don't be carried away by deviants,clubbers etc.At all times manage you time
